Diet Plan For Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is an illness found in pregnant women when their blood sugar level shoots up. According to an analysis, five to ten out of every 100 pregnant women living in the United States get gestational diabetes during pregnancy. This is an alarming situation because excessive glucose in the blood may be harmful for the baby.

It is very important that pregnant women follow a good nutritional diet, if they develop gestational diabetes. Basically, the development of diabetes occurs due to the inability of the body to produce or to use sufficient insulin.

This causes accumulation of large amount of glucose in the blood and the only way to keep the level of blood sugar under control is by following a specific meal plan. There are some general dietary guidelines that need to be followed in order to keep the blood sugar level under control. You can eat different kinds of foods depending on how you appropriately distribute calories and carbohydrates in your diet plan. You must ensure that the snacks and meals you eat are balanced evenly throughout the day. Eating too much of a particular snack may cause an adverse impact.

It is important that your meal plan contains more carbohydrates than in normal days. It is highly recommendable to use complex carbohydrates evenly during the day. Avoid skipping meals because if consistency is not maintained then the blood sugar level will get out of control. Therefore make sure you follow your planned diet on timely basis.

Most of the times, the blood sugar level gets out of whack in the morning and this is the time when intake of good breakfast becomes necessary. During this time, diabetic women must limit the intake of carbohydrates and increase the amount of protein like eggs, cheese and nuts.

The diet plan also includes high fibre foods like cereals, dried peas and fresh fruits and vegetables. Fibre foods are particularly useful in keeping blood sugar levels controlled after meals because they take greater amount of time in breaking down as compared to simple carbohydrates. Food and beverages that contain high amount of sugar must be strictly avoided because such food items can dramatically elevate blood sugar level. However, you can eat foods that are sweetened with artificial sweetener.

Milk contains high lactose and therefore it becomes necessary that you limit its intake. You can find an alternative source but milk in the diet plan can be harmful. Not just a planned diet but regular exercise also plays a major part in controlling the level of blood sugar. You can ask your dietician about the intensity of exercise suitable for you.
